Hey Phill/Ben,
Glad to see you're back on the road, though it's a bit far from Toronto for my liking. I caught you guys at Sunday morning gospel jam at the Hillside festival last summer and you made a lasting impression. I was lured that morning by some favorite artists - Be Good Tanyas, Josh Ritter, Po Girl etc. and found some great new ones - like you guys! I will also tell you that I am one of those taper guys who compulsively records most of the shows I see. The gospel jam was no exception. I had some mics setup at the back, a board feed running and I even videotaped this one - it all came out very well (I'm normally just an audio guy). All in all, that was my favorite section of music from a great weekend and you two were the highlight. There was a fantastic sense of collaboration and spontaneity. I thought that you guys stood out for two reasons. First, your songs were phenomenal and totally invited group sing-a-long and instrumental participation. Having 'learned' them in that setting, I was blown away at how much of the sound was built up by all the other players without practice or rehearsals...just playing along to solid writing. Second, your contribution to other artists' songs was bang on. I've had time to listen and watch this session over and over I now realize how much of the signature came from the two of you. Phill took all kinds of chances and ripped it up while Ben layered it on (like on the Paul Reddick or Josh Ritter tunes!) Anyways, I go to see and hear a lot of live music and wanted to let you know how unique and special that morning was. It was just one of the moments when it all came together. That's one of the reasons that I go and see so much live music - there's lots of good times but once a year something really huge happens when you least expect it. I feel privileged to have been there and to have a keepsake of the event. I had intended to email you a long time ago, pay you a compliment and offer up a copy of the recording. I've had a fair bit of personal stuff going on the last 8 months or so and am attempting to resume normal life, which means doing things like writing this email. I'll also offer you the use of any of the audio or video clips if you want to post them on your website or anything like that. Let me know if you have an email address where I can send you a few mp3s or something to sample. Have fun and keep playing! david |
